CENC(シーエンク)は、ブロック暗号に基づく暗号化モードです。

メッセージ認証コードOMAC(オーマック)が、 NIST(米国商務省標準技術局)により推奨方式として採用されました。 NISTはOMACをCMAC(シーマック、Cipher-based MAC, 暗号に基づくMAC)と命名して使用します。 CMACとOMACは同一のアルゴリズムです。

連邦政府標準ブロック暗号AESの選定に伴い、 NISTは暗号化モード、メッセージ認証コード、認証暗号化モードの 各ブロック暗号利用モードの見直しを進めてきました。 この選定プロセスはすべて公開で行われ、 世界中の暗号研究者による議論のもと、 2001年には暗号化モード、2004年には認証暗号化モードの推奨方式が決定されました。 そして、2005年5月19日(現地時間18日)、メッセージ認証コードCMACを正式に 推奨方式として採用することを発表しました。 国産の情報セキュリティ技術が NISTに採用されたのはこれがはじめてのことです。
